THE MASK OF ANHUR

More than 3000 years ago an alien craft crash-landed in western Asia. A nomadic warlord, Anhur, licking his wounds after a resounding defeat, retrieves the mask from the dying pilot. Donning it, his mind is opened up to unparalleled power, which he uses to revive his campaign, making him overlord of a vast swathe of lands. Dead by the hand of a friend fearful of the mask’s malign influence, the mask and its owner are buried, the tomb lost to history, until an two archaeologists, an Englishman, James Dunning and Austrian, Gerhard Doering, unearth it in 1938. Behind the scenes, a Nazi archaeologist, von Neurath, his mind full of arcane and occult knowledge he wants to harness to his foul ideology, waits in the shadows.

Soon, the archaeological team, abandoned, staggers back to civilisation, only to see one of its members tempted by the mask. Maddened, James Dunning kills himself. His widow, Alice, who had accompanied him on the expedition, and Doering flee to Venice, where a gang of thugs steals the mask from them. Aided by the Doctor, Val and Tom, they retreat to a hotel. There, the Doctor ponders the nature of the mask and realises its awful potential. While they rest, Val, mistaken for the Alice, is kidnapped by the von Neurath’s thugs. Tom, the Doctor and the Doering desperately work to find Val, as the power of the mask begins to spread over the city.

The Doctor and the von Neurath engage in a final struggle for the mask atop the Tower of St. Mark. The mask is destroyed, and the threat vanishes. Mourning the dead, the Doering and the Alice leave for home, with the shadow of war dogging their thoughts and their steps. Sometime later, in London, the Alice welcomes the Doering and his family, as the shadows of war begin to race across Europe.
